Hierarchical community structure in complex (social) networks

چکیده
The investigation of community structure in networks is a task of great importance in many disciplines, namely physics, sociology, biology and computer science where systems are often represented as graphs. One of the challenges is to find local communities from a local viewpoint in a graph without global information in order to reproduce the subjective hierarchical vision for each vertex. In this paper we present the improvement of an information dynamics algorithm in which the label propagation of nodes is based on the Markovian flow of information in the network under cognitiveinspired constraints [1]. In this framework we have introduced two more complex heuristics that allow the algorithm to detect the multi-resolution hierarchical community structure of networks from a source vertex or communities adopting fixed values of model’s parameters. Experimental results show that the proposed methods are efficient and well-behaved in both realworld and synthetic networks. PACS numbers: PACS 07.05.Kf, 89.65.-s, 89.75.Fb

Community Detection using a New Node Scoring and Synchronous Label Updating of Boundary Nodes in Social Networks
Community structure is vital to discover the important structures and potential property of complex networks. In recent years, the increasing quality of local community detection approaches has become a hot spot in the study of complex network due to the advantages of linear time complexity and applicable for large-scale networks. However, there are many shortcomings in these methods such as in...
متن کاملHierarchical Problems for Community Detection in Complex Networks
An objective method for extracting network community structure is an extremely useful tool for understanding the large complex networks found in the social and biological sciences. One such method, which relies on the maximization of the modularity quality function Q, has received a great deal of attention and is now widely used. We find that, for networks with a hierarchical modular structure,...
متن کاملA Case for Open Network Health Systems: Systems as Networks in Public Mental Health
Increases in incidents involving so-called confused persons have brought attention to the potential costs of recent changes to public mental health (PMH) services in the Netherlands. Decentralized under the (Community) Participation Act (2014), local governments must find resources to compensate for reduced central funding to such services or “innovate.” But innovation, even when pressure for c...
متن کاملAn Optimized Firefly Algorithm based on Cellular Learning Automata for Community Detection in Social Networks
The structure of the community is one of the important features of social networks. A community is a sub graph which nodes have a lot of connections to nodes of inside the community and have very few connections to nodes of outside the community. The objective of community detection is to separate groups or communities that are linked more closely. In fact, community detection is the clustering...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Structure and Evolution of an Open-source Community
Open-source processes are based on the paradigm of self-organized communities as opposed to traditional hierarchical teams. These processes have not only been successful in the software development domain, but are increasingly being used in the development of physical products. In order to successfully adapt open-source processes to product realization there is a need to understand how opensour...
متن کاملHierarchical benchmark graphs for testing community detection algorithms
Hierarchical organization is an important, prevalent characteristic of complex systems; to understand their organization, the study of the underlying (generally complex) networks that describe the interactions between their constituents plays a central role. Numerous previous works have shown that many real-world networks in social, biologic, and technical systems present hierarchical organizat...
